The four letters that used to be assigned to every merchant ship as a means of identification. They were hoisted using the alphabetical flags of the International Code of Signals so that the ship could be easily identified by another ship or by coastguards. Nowadays all ships and shore stations have a nine-digit Maritime Mobile Service Identity number which is used when communicating by VHF radio.
