An aspartyl peptidase (SPP, EC 3.4.23.-, 377 aa) that catalyses the intramembrane proteolysis of some signal peptides after they have been cleaved from a preprotein. It has sequence motifs characteristic of the presenilin-type aspartic proteases. More than fifteen proteins homologous to human SPP have been identified and can be subdivided into at least five subfamilies. Their function is unclear.
