Overview

sign vehicle

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The physical or material form of the sign (e.g. words, images, sounds, acts, or objects). For some commentators this means the same as the signifier (which for Saussure did not refer to material form). The Peircean equivalent is the representamen: the form which the sign takes, but even for Peirce this was not necessarily a material form. Note that the specific material form used (e.g. a word written in one typeface rather than another) may generate connotations of its own. See also semiotic triangle.
