The form of pneumoconiosis caused by inhalation of silica dust, a disease of miners who work underground in hard rock containing a high silica content, and various other occupational groups. Silicosis causes progressive fibrotic pneumoconiosis that continues after exposure ceases and ultimately causes death from right-sided heart failure (cor pulmonale). Coal miners sometimes get silicoanthracosis, and the common combination with tuberculosis is called silicotuberculosis.
