biblical scholar. From 1662 to 1678 he was a member of the French Oratory. In his Histoire critique du Vieux Testament (1678), he denied that Moses was the author of the Pentateuch, arguing from the existence of duplicate accounts of the same incident and the variations of style. He is generally regarded as the founder of OT criticism.
