An email standard. It is one of the most popular email protocols and forms the basis of a large amount of Internet mail traffic. It has been written so that mail delivered using the protocol is able to interact with a wide variety of incompatible mail servers. The main function of the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, or SMTP as it is often known, is to specify how email messages are entered and stored on a mail server, and how email servers collaborate to deliver a message to a recipient.
