short‐story writer, born in Bristol and brought up in London. She was educated at Oxford University where she read English. She has published four collections of short stories: Four Bare Legs in a Bed (1990), Dear George (1995), Hey Yeah Right Get a Life (2000), and Constitutional (2005). Described as a ‘virtuoso’ of the short story, her work explores the lives and concerns of contemporary women and families in deft, sensual prose. Her awards include the Hawthornden Prize, the E. M. Forster Award, and a Somerset Maugham Award. In 1993 Granta magazine named her one of the ‘Best of Young British Novelists’.
