An exchange for securities and derivatives in Singapore. It was formed in 1999 with the merger of the Stock Exchange of Singapore (SES) and the Singapore International Monetary Exchange (SIMEX). The SES was established in 1973, after Malaysia's decision to sever its currency link with Singapore. The main market changed to electronic trading in 1990. SIMEX, a commodities futures exchange, was launched in 1984. The combined exchange is a public company subject to regulation by the central bank and the Monetary Authority of Singapore. The main indicator is the SGX Straits Times Index.
