Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Iranian military force formed after the Islamic revolution of 1979 to purge the existing armed forces of elements considered un-Islamic and a threat to the revolutionary regime. Its role as guardian of the revolution is affirmed in the constitution. Includes mlitary command units for army, air force, and navy, and cabinet-level ministry. Activities have included restoring order to cities and dislodging opposition groups from government positions in the early days of revolution, suppressing ethnic uprisings throughout the country in 1979, helping Ayatollah Khomeini's efforts to monopolize power during attacks by leftist mujahidin in 1981, and actively participating in the Iran-Iraq War.
