Quick Reference

Army of Prophet's Companions. A militant Sunni group in Pakistan blamed for a stream of anti-Shii violence in the country. Founded by a Sunni cleric, Mawlana Haq Nawaz Jhangvi, in the mid-1980s. The group wants Pakistan to be declared a Sunni Muslim state and Shiis to be designated in the constitution as a non-Muslim minority. Jhangvi was assassinated in 1990 in a sectarian attack and was succeeded by Mawlana Azam Tariq. The group was banned in December 2001 by Pakistan's government for its involvement in sectarian violence.
