Quick Reference

The act of scoring in basketball by placing rather than throwing the ball into the basket, with one hand at least over the basket rim so making the art of scoring look certain, and at the same time relatively effortless. The term is said to have been coined by an LA Lakers announcer and has come to refer to a near-certainty, or the high probability of success, in other spheres of life, and also to a particularly stylish way of achieving a task. In the USA, sponsors—the soft drinks company Sprite, for instance—have promoted ‘Rising Stars’ competitions for slamdunking, in which style—the leap, the swivel, the 720 degrees dunk—is all.
