Ballet from the musical comedy On Your Toes. With choreography by Balanchine, music by R. Rodgers, set by Joe Mielzner, and costumes by Sharaff it was premiered 11 Apr. 1936 at Imperial Theatre, New York, with Bolger, Geva, and G. Church. The hero is an American dancer with a Russian ballet company who finds himself dancing for his life as gangsters pursue him. It was produced as a separate ballet 2 May 1968 by New York City Ballet, State Theater, New York, with Farrell and Mitchell and has been revived by Birmingham Royal Ballet (Birmingham, 1999) and others.
