Quick Reference

[French tranche de vie]

A term originally applied to ‘realistic’ writers such as Zola, implying that such work presented episodes of everyday life as if it were an unmediated recording. For instance, dialogue might bear a striking resemblance to real-life conversations, or the frame of the work (such as the last page of the novel, the final curtain onstage, or the picture frame of a painting) might seem to cut across ongoing action like a photographic snapshot.
