The first of two battles which confirmed Robert I, king of Scots, in his position after the death of Edward I. Probably in October, Robert captured the Comyn castle of Inverlochy and attacked Elgin and Banff. He then fell seriously ill and had to retreat to Slioch, east of Huntly. His enemies, the earls of Buchan and Atholl, made an unsuccessful attack on Christmas Day.
