(1833–1916), journalist famous for his firsthand reports to the New York Tribune of the Civil War, the Austro-Prussian War, and the Franco-Prussian War. He was connected with the London Times (1895–1905), where he did much to further the cause of Anglo-American amity. His books include London Letters (1891), Studies of Men (1895), and Anglo-American Memories (2 vols., 1911, 1912).
