The Health Act 2006 banned smoking in enclosed public spaces, including virtually all workplaces, in England and Wales. Scotland already had a smoking ban. Developments in the UK are part of an international trend to use legislative power to protect employees (and citizens) from the adverse health effects of passive smoking. Statutory bans of this kind have effectively overridden the no-smoking policies introduced by many employers.
