Quick Reference

Smooth muscle specific actin-binding proteins that are abundant in visceral (smoothelin-A) and vascular (smoothelin-B) smooth muscle. Smoothelins colocalize with α-smooth muscle actin in stress fibres and are involved in the contractile process. Smoothelin-like 1 (SMTNL1, CHASM) has a calponin homology domain and shares sequence similarity with smoothelin but does not associate with F-actin in vitro, and its role is unclear.
