Apart from official social safety nets that exist in most Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) nations, family, friends, and neighborhood networks provide an informal social support system for most people in urban societies. Informal social support systems have long been perceived as more supportive in rural communities than in urban ones, but reality does not always accord with this. See also social networks.
