Organization established in New York in 1877, mainly to hold exhibitions of members' work. Most of the early members (including Chase and Saint-Gaudens) had trained in Europe and they wanted a more progressive exhibiting venue than the National Academy of Design. However, differences between the two organizations narrowed and they merged in 1906.
