A family of at least eight proteins (suppressor of cytokine signalling, SOCS1 to SOCS7 and CIS (cytokine-inducible SH2-containing protein); all ~210 aa; rapidly induced in response to IL-6 and other cytokines, and apparently switch off JAK signalling. All contain a central SH2 domain. JAB (JAK binding protein; STAT-induced STAT inhibitor-1, SSI-1) is SOCS1. Aberrant methylation of SOCS1 correlates with its transcriptional silencing in hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines.
