(b ?c.1605; d London, 11 Feb. 1681). Painter probably of Netherlandish origin who spent all his known career in England. He was much less successful than his contemporary Lely (he never worked at court), but he is often a more interesting painter, as he had a strong grasp of character and eschewed flattery and superficial elegance. There are examples of his work in the National Portrait Gallery and Tate Britain, London, but his masterpiece is the full-length Cecil, Second Lord Baltimore, with a Child and a Negro Page (c. 1670 Enoch Pratt Library, Baltimore), which shows his considerable powers as a colourist; Ellis Waterhouse describes it as ‘one of the most fascinating portraits painted in England in the seventeenth century’.
