A proposal to launch solar power plants (consisting of large sheets of solar cells on frames) into Earth orbit to convert sunlight to electricity and send it to ground receiving stations. The idea was first proposed in the USA in the 1970s but has yet to be realized. Critics of SPS say it could be used as a weapons system.

Japan announced in 2001 that it had plans to launch a large solar power station into geostationary orbit by 2040, to generate 1 million kilowatts per second.
