A telescope specifically designed for studying the Sun. Lenses or mirrors with very long focal lengths are used so that solar features can be seen in detail. Many large solar telescopes, such as the McMath–Pierce Solar Telescope, are located on high mountains to reduce atmospheric turbulence and cloud cover. Even better conditions are obtained at observatories surrounded by water, such as the Big Bear Observatory in California. See also solar tower.
