(SSI)

A spacecraft subsystem composed of a telescope, image sensor, and electronics. The SSI, which weighs 29 kg, was designed and assembled at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California. It has a wavelength range that extends from the visible into the near-infrared. The SSI flew on the Galileo probe, using the same type of telescope that had been aboard the Voyager probes; it was focused on infinity.
