US dancer, choreographer, and writer. He studied at the Martha Graham School and performed with the companies of Donald McKayle (1961–4), Graham (1964–5), and Cunningham (1965–8) before founding his own company in 1969. He choreographed many works for it, which frequently incorporated chance procedures and improvisation with set choreography. In 1998 he founded Paradigm, a company for senior dancers. He also teaches widely and reviews for various publications, including Village Voice and Dance Magazine.
