Quick Reference

A method used to identify which chromosome carries a particular gene, without sexual crossing. The general principle is to produce unstable heterokaryons (often human–mouse heterokaryons) between the cell with the gene of interest and another cell and then isolate a series of clones in which different chromosomes have been lost. It is then possible to deduce which chromosome carries the gene.
