A method that uses sound waves to assess the presence of solid substances in a fluid medium. It is used to detect depth in the sea, the presence of schools of fish, and mines and enemy submarines during warfare, and in obstetrics, by means of ultrasonography, to delineate the dimensions of the fetus.
