sound pressure level

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The absolute intensity of a sound in decibels relative to a reference level of 10−16W/cm2 (watts per square centimetre), slightly below the average human absolute threshold for a sound of 1,000 hertz (about two octaves above Middle C). Thus a sound of 60  dB SPL is 60  dB higher than the reference level and has an intensity of 10−10W/cm2, and a doubling or halving of absolute sound intensity always corresponds to a change of 3  dB. See also decibel. SPL abbrev.
