A sour is a mixed drink consisting of a spirit (usually whisky, but brandy, gin, etc. can also be used), lemon or lime juice (hence the name sour), and sugar. It originated in the USA in the mid-nineteenth century: J. Thomas gave the first recorded directions for making it in his How to Mix Drinks (1862).
