Quick Reference

The Sox family of genes: (Sry-related HMG-box genes) are involved in many developmental processes and their products, like the Sry proteins, have a DNA-binding domain, the HMG box. Sox-2 regulates transcription of the FGF4 gene; sox-3 is involved in neural tube closure and lens specification; sox-4 is a transcriptional activator in lymphocytes; sox-9 plays an essential role in sex determination and may act immediately downstream of sry, and mutations cause campomelic dysplasia; sox-10 is important in neural crest development. Many other sox genes are known but their functions are not yet determined.
