Quick Reference

A secondary school which specializes in the teaching of a particular area of the curriculum. From 1994 maintained schools were able to apply for specialist status in design and technology, mathematics, and modern languages. This range was gradually expanded, so that schools may now apply for specialist status in arts, business and enterprise, engineering, humanities, languages, mathematics and computing, music, science, sports, and technology. Specialist schools are permitted to select up to 10 per cent of their pupil intake, based not on pupils' ability, but on their aptitude for the specialist subject.
