An offence specified in the Prosecution of Offences Act 1985 (Specified Proceedings) Order 1999 (SI 1999/904). Under s 3 of the Prosecution of Offences Act 1985, the Director of Public Prosecutions must take over the conduct of all criminal proceedings instituted on behalf of a police force, whether by a member of that force or any other person. An exception is made in proceedings for specified offences. These include a number of minor road traffic and other offences, the routine nature of which do not require independent review.
