An analytical technique in which a sample is heated to a high temperature, usually in a carbon arc, to produce emission lines whose intensities are proportional to the abundance of elements present. Line intensities may be recorded on photographic plates or measured directly by a photosensitive device, e.g. a photomultiplier. See also spectrum.
