With the assistance of Dibdin, he assembled a magnificent private library of more than 40,000 books at his family seat at Althorp, Northamptonshire. His collection was especially rich in early printed books, particularly incunabula. Spencer’s library was sold in 1892 to form part of the John Rylands Library.
