New York poet whose lyrics in A Canopic Jar (1921) promised the command of form and intense personal idiom that were fulfilled in Fiddler's Farewell (1926, Pulitzer Prize), especially noted for its wit and understanding of feminine character. The poems in Naked Heel (1931) have been criticized as emotionally “thin” and excessively formal. Slow Wall (1939) appeared in an enlarged edition in 1946.
