An adaptation of the adrenal medulla to regular, prolonged endurance training. It is characterized by an increased capacity to secrete adrenaline in response to various stimuli (e.g. hypoxia, hypoglycaemia, hypercapnia) and, possibly, an increase in the size of the adrenal medulla. Since adrenaline increases mental alertness and muscle contractility, sports adrenal medulla is probably advantageous in competitive sports.
