A US-based trade association of sport retailers and fitness brands whose monitoring of trends in the sports goods business provides data on participation in and expenditure upon sport. It was founded in New York, USA, in 1906 by sports businessmen, and has promoted partnerships with the federal government on schemes such as PE4life (2001). Its Sports and Fitness Participation Report, analysing participation patterns in over a hundred sports and physical activities, has become an essential source of data and market intelligence for the sector, though it does not come cheap: a full report for one year can cost up to US$500.
