Quick Reference

A term coined by Norbert Elias to describe the process whereby popular cultural activities or folk games were changed by the development of codes of conduct and rules, and by changing conceptions of the acceptable limits of violence. Elias referred to the ‘“sportization” of pastimes…as a shorthand for their transformation in English society into sports and the export of some of them on an almost global scale’ (Quest for Excitement: Sport and Leisure in the Civilizing Process, with Eric Dunning, 1986).
