The number of people within a country, community, or some other grouping who physically participate in sporting activities. Different criteria are used by different nations to calculate their sport population. For example, in the old Soviet Union, it was calculated on the basis of those engaged in organized physical culture activities more than twice a week, with each session being at least 1 h long. In the United States of America and Europe its calculation is usually based on activities which are performed at least three times a week for more than 30 min each time.
