A gene family encoding proteins that negatively regulate fibroblast growth factor signalling in a variety of systems. The original Drosophila gene is involved in regulating branching in the tracheal system, but the mammalian homologues (SPRY1–3) have comparable growth-factor regulatory functions. SPRY1 is down-regulated in ~40% of prostate cancers. A fourth member of the family has also been identified that suppresses the insulin receptor and epidermal growth factor receptor signalling pathways. See SPREDs.
