(1916–1999) A prominent Indian social anthropologist, well known for his work on the caste system and the development of the Sanskritization theory. Educated at the Universities of Bombay and Oxford, he conducted fieldwork in rural South India; he was the recipient of many honours both in India and abroad. Included among his many important publications are Religion and Society Among the Coorgs of South India (1952), The Remembered Village (1976), and The Dominant Caste and Other Essays (1995).
