A list of situations, and the behavioural responses of an individual to each of the situations. Originally, the S–R inventory was designed to study general anxiety, but recently it has been used to study dominance, hostility, and interpersonal behaviour. Sometimes physiological responses, such as heart rate, are recorded in addition to the subjects being asked how they feel in different situations. An S–R inventory of anxiousness, for example, contains 11 anxiety-eliciting situations and 14 modes of response varying from ‘heart beats faster’ to ‘feel anxious’. Each mode of response is paired with each of the 11 situations providing 154 inventory items.
