His collections of poetry include The Astronomy of Love (1961), A Familiar Tree (1978) (which mixes deep‐rooted family and local history with a story of migration), and The Guest from the Future (1995), which celebrates female survival in the person of Akhmatova and others. Owen (1974), whose work he has also edited, and L. MacNeice (1995), and has edited several anthologies, with a particular interest in war poetry.
