patron saint of Poland, known as St Stanislaus of Cracow. As bishop of Cracow (1072–79) he excommunicated King Boleslaus II. According to tradition Stanislaus was murdered by Boleslaus while taking Mass. His feast day is 11 April (formerly 7 May).
