Quick Reference

(b. 1889, d. 28 Apr. 1945).

Italian Fascist One of the earliest Italian Fascists, he led the Fascist movement in Trentino. He was Secretary of the National Fascist Party 1931–9. During this time he managed to increase party membership to 2.6 million, though his efforts to tighten party organization to translate greater party membership into increased effectiveness were widely opposed. He became increasingly resented by the Fascist old guard, so that Mussolini was eventually forced to withdraw his support. He was executed by Milanese partisans.
