A form of irradiation illusion in which a central dark star is surrounded by dark diamonds, the spaces between the star and each of the diamonds being equal to the diameter of the star and the longest diameter of a diamond but appearing much larger (see illustration). The illusion is enhanced by an effect related to the Müller-Lyer illusion arising from the arrowhead shapes formed by the star and the diamonds.

Star illusion. The white space between the points of the star and of each of the diamonds is equal to the diameter of the star and the longest diameter of a diamond.
