Quick Reference

A protocol which is incapable of remembering the results and data associated with the interactions it governs. Probably the best-known stateless protocol is the Hypertext Transfer Protocol used for transferring Web pages from a Web server to a browser. This protocol cannot remember the result of a previous instruction to transfer a page. There are a number of devices which have been used to overcome this problem: for example, in the case of HTTP, one solution is to embed a cookie on a client machine which holds data to keep track of the interactions.
