A cytosolic phosphoprotein (oncoprotein 18, Op18, leukaemia-associated phosphoprotein p18, LAP18, metablastin, 149 aa) that stoichiometrically binds two tubulin heterodimers and blocks assembly of microtubules unless inactivated by phosphorylation by KIS (kinase interacting with stathmin). Several other kinases target stathmin, including PKA, MAPK, CDK2, p34cdc2, and CaM kinase II and IV. It is overexpressed in some tumours. Stathmin-like 2 (superior cervical ganglion-10, 179 aa) is a neuronal growth-associated protein with significant sequence similarity to stathmin and stathmin-like 3 (180 aa) and both have the microtubule-destabilizing functions.
