A document issued by the European Commission setting out the case against a business that has infringed the rules of competition law under Articles 81 and 82 of the Treaty of Rome. The statement will set a reasonable time limit for a reply, which can be extended (about 2–3 months is the usual period initially given). In the UK the Competition Act 1998 also empowers the Office of Fair Trading to initiate proceedings for breach of UK competition law by way of issuing a Statement of Objections.
