A statement that the party putting forward a document, or the maker of a witness statement, believes that the facts stated in the document are true. Under Part 22 of the Civil Procedure Rules statements of case and witness statements must be verified by a statement of truth. Under Part 35 an expert's report must be verified by a statement of truth. The court may strike out a statement of case that is not verified by a statement of truth, and may direct that a witness statement not verified by a statement of truth shall not be admissible as evidence. Proceedings for contempt of court may be brought against a person who makes, or causes to be made, a false statement in a document verified by a statement of truth without an honest belief in its truth.
